The Benefit of Doing Nothing

The Benefit of Doing Nothing

Raise your hand if you are your own worst enemy...

I'm raising them both right now.  Since I can remember I've beat myself up about one thing or another.  Last week I felt the effects of serious burn out.  I'd had two monster weeks back to back and just hadn't slept well.  It was a Tuesday - one day before I was set to give a significant presentation at work.  I was at a happy hour with some of my colleagues in Chicago and I just felt the sinking feeling that I needed to take a nap.  Right there on top of the table if I had to.  Luckily, everyone else seemed to be feeling the length of the day and we called it an early night.  I walked back to my hotel, went up to my room, showered and got in the bed.  I sat there for about 4 hours staring.  You read that right - staring.  At nothing in particular, just staring.  The TV was on but I don't know what station I was tuned in to.

Then something clicked and instantly I started feeling guilty that I wasn't more productive in the four hours I was just sitting there staring at nothing.  I thought, "what a waste!  You could have been doing lunges, or preparing for your presentation, or writing a chapter in your book." And just as I really started trippin' I got out of bed, went to the mirror and the following words came out of my mouth:

"Give yourself the space to feel things"   - Me to myself

I don't know where those words came from, but I think it was God. I think He was telling me to give myself a break.  To give myself a little....grace.  The truth is I was feeling something.  TIRED.  I was feeling so very tired.  And so I submitted to that, got back in the bed, and resumed staring at nothing until I fell asleep.

Sometimes you need a little reminder that the time you spend being still and doing nothing is as productive as the alternative...
