Hello, lovely...

On Letting It Go...

On Letting It Go...

Have you ever tried to make something happen that just wouldn't? I'm the queen of beating my head against a wall for months and sometimes YEARS trying to will something to happen. In many cases, it's trying to hang onto a relationship that just needs to end, putting effort into an activity or organization that doesn't fit my real interests, or sometimes its torturing myself about something I want that's really not what I need.

I came across the quote below that hit me like a ton of bricks:

Maybe instead of trying over and over again and either failing or not getting anything out of it, we should try a new thing.  I remember thinking I was supposed to write a novel last year.  I would sit down, write a chapter, get frustrated and then not write again for months.  At some point I realized that it wasn't writing that was the issue, but instead it was writing a novel that just wasn't the right thing for me at the time.  I found more freedom and satisfaction from writing posts for this blog - short think pieces that don't make me feel anxious and aren't as grueling and daunting to think about as a WHOLE NOVEL.

We are taught as children that "if at first we don't succeed, try, try, again."  It's a nice thought, but the older and wiser I get I realize it's not that accurate.  You see, sometimes there are things we need to give up.  Or at least there are things we need to let go of for now.  In my case, perhaps I will write a book at some point in my life, but right now it's just not the right time for me.  Maybe you are in a friendship or relationship trying to make it more than it is.  Or maybe you are the person trying to squeeze yourself into a size 4 dress when you know you should be in a 6.  Regardless of the circumstance, we can all attest to holding on for just a little longer than we should and not reading the tea leaves that say move on.  Whether that "move on" is forever or for now, I wish you for you the courage to know when it's time to move to another door...
