Monday Obsessions: Specs, Justice and Eyeliner

Monday Obsessions: Specs, Justice and Eyeliner

Happy Monday, folks!  I hope you had a fabulous weekend.  Today's a day to start a fresh week! Some of you may have gone heavy on the chips and dip during the Super Bowl, so here are a few things that I'm obsessed with that make life feel a little lighter this morning!

1) Eyewear: Thanks to Oprah and Gayle King, I am now on the hunt for some new specs.  I've been a fan of the obnoxiously large glasses look for quite some time, and am currently sporting a pair while writing this piece. I'm loving Warby Parker not only for the variety in their frames (they carry both reading glasses and sunglasses), but because of what the company is about.  Marketed as a "socially conscious business," for every pair of glasses sold, the company distributes one to a person in need. They also have a smart business model that includes a fantastic free home try-on program.  Warby Parker works hard to avoid falling into the trap of the eyeglass industry monopoly, instead choosing to design their products in-house at a fraction of the cost to consumers.  Now that's something worth getting behind!

2) A Second ChanceThis story from CBS Morning News ran last week and highlights two men who were imprisoned for crimes they did not commit.  These gentlemen have invested their settlement funds from the state into a restaurant in Brooklyn where they serve up fantastic food, but also offer a second chance for persons who may otherwise not be able to find employment post-incarceration.  They also spend significant time helping others who are serving time for questionable convictions.  I can't get this story out of my system!  Not only do I want to go to the restaurant, Brownstone, but I am motivated to step up my efforts for the cause of justice.

3) Eyeliner: I'm a huge fan of the five-minute face these days (post on this to come soon).  The highlight of the process is having a good eyeliner that can hold its own with an otherwise bare-looking face.  These days I'm obsessed with Laura Mercier's Kajal D'Orient Eye Liner which is a non-traditional pencil-esque liner with a scandalously fabulous tip.  This tool is perfect for creating an awesome cat eye on the days when you want to be a little edgy.

Enjoy your Monday, people!  May this week be productive and full of joy!

Extra obsession: the chick in the featured photo by Simon Wakaba. She's a badass.
