Dr. King's Blueprint...

Dr. King's Blueprint...

This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day couldn't feel more important as we wade through the muck left for us by our political figures.  It seems that issues that Dr. King fought for over 50 years ago are once again on the national stage.  That's both sad and encouraging.  Sad because shouldn't we have grown past the worst of times?  Encouraging because we have Dr. King's blueprint to help us navigate our way through it all.  And I believe that we will get through it all.  I believe this because if the America of the 1960s, facing extremely unfavorable odds, could find its way to some form of balance, can't America now do the same with the benefit of history on our side?

I for one refuse to feel defeated by the rhetoric and ugliness that has become so common among us due to the permission our leadership has given for people to abandon basic human dignity.  Instead, I choose to find strength in the fact that the dream of that young preacher on August 28, 1963 is still relevant; loving one another and attempting to understand each other despite the country's seeming default on the "promissory note" Dr. King alluded to in his speech.   And while that dream may still be a dream that is only partially realized, I am thankful for Dr. King's sacrifices.  Indeed, America still needs to be reminded of the "fierce urgency of now", but at least we have the legacy of Dr. King to help guide us through.

Take time to re-read this speech...and his final one here...
