Cooking For Love
Being engaged is like being in a holding pattern. For the months (or year in my case) leading up to the "Big Day", you train your "marriage muscles" for various things. Like a plane in a holding pattern, you go around and around until you are finally prepared to land. The engagement holding pattern includes everything from bridal boot camp to get into tip top shape, marriage counseling to get your emotional and spiritual self in check, and then also learning the "wife stuff" such as favorite meals and the like.
In my case, because I am type A, I am determined to be the kind of "wife" that my mom was. That means working very hard at making sure everything is covered. The top of the list is cooking. My mom had far more than a few specialty dishes and I am 100% committed to learning some of my own! These days Sundays are dedicated to learning new dishes. As a single gal, I cooked to get by. I survived on the basics which was sufficient. Now, not only does the new bridal diet require some heightened level of thinking about recipes and carbs and calories, etc., but it also helps me learn how to make delectable, delicious and nutritious foods!
Now -- I have so far received an A- to A+ on the new recipes (we are both trying to forget the accidental Salt Chicken from last month). I would say that I am getting better. Slowly I am trying more difficult dishes that as a single person were just not worth my time. However, in this holding pattern, I am finding the benefit of making the effort to try something new. Not only does it show that I care by preparing something healthier and tastier, but it's just good for business. A smile over the dinner table is something worth working for.
